How to Talk to Your Endocrinologist: Getting the Most Out of a 15-Minute Appointment

You have exactly 900 seconds.

That is the average length of a standard endocrinology appointment. In those 15 minutes, you are expected to summarize 2,160 hours of life, 1,800+ medical decisions, and several thousand data points from your CGM.

Most of the time, it goes like this: You sit on the crinkly paper, the nurse takes your vitals, the doctor glances at your A1C, asks "How are you feeling?", you say "Fine," they renew your prescriptions, and you’re back in the parking lot feeling like nothing actually changed.

Stop Asking "How Am I Doing?"

That is a passive question. It puts the doctor in the role of a judge. Instead, ask high-leverage, technical questions that force a strategic adjustment.

Addressing the Mental Load Without Being Dismissed

T1D is 10% biology and 90% cognitive load. Yet, mental health is often the first thing cut from a 15-minute window.

Knowing the Players: Endo vs. CDE

Most people treat their endo as their primary point of contact for everything. But in the ecosystem of T1D, they have different roles:

  • The Endocrinologist (The Architect): They are there for the big picture: labs, thyroid function, long-term complication screening, and high-level prescription management.
  • The CDE/CDCES (The Mechanic): They are often the ones with the time and the "lived experience" knowledge to help you with the day-to-day. If you need to figure out why pizza ruins your life or how to run a 10k without crashing, the CDE is your best friend.

  5. The Lab Prep: If you can, get your labs done a week before the appointment so you can actually discuss the results during your 15 minutes, rather than getting a generic "looks good" email later.
